In the Long group we believe that diversity brings out the best in all of us. A diverse community stretches and empowers us to look beyond what we think was possible. It is the best way to learn and grow as individuals. We value diversity as a part of the foundation of scientific community, bringing a variety of perspectives to solve today's problems. We welcome members from all walks of life, hosting students from China, Argentina, India while others claim Hispanic or Arabic heritage.

Here at the Long group we strive to create and leverage opportunities, such as REM and EFRI, to build a united and driven community and strive towards a more inclusive and equitable scientific community.

Research Experience Mentorship (REM)

REM was a 10 week long paid summer research program at ASU for undergraduate students. The aim of the program was to design a culturally sensitive recruitment program to make research in polymer chemistry available to students from minority population. To enhance the research experience, each undergraduate student was paired with a graduate student mentor. To ensure a more collective program, there were several social events organized with the intention to enhance the teamwork and unity while making the events fun and engaging. The program was a success as it presented a platform for diverse research in the field of polymer science. The program concluded with participating students presenting their work to the entire program body. 

Emerging Frontiers In Research and Innovation (EFRI)

EFRI program is a multi-university collaborative project with the National Science Foundation (NSF). The main outcome of the program is to recycle and reprocess waste polyurethane sustainably. The program is at the interface of science, engineering, and sustainability. It is a fine example of inclusive research and collaboration. The program brings together research leaders from polymer science, additive manufacturing, sustainability, and industry leaders like adidas for the entire community at large.
